St. Bernadette Newswire: Orange Shirt – Monday September 30th

Orange Shirt Day is an annual event that started in 2013 to recognize the legacy of Residential school system for First Nations, Metis and Inuit families and communities. It is a show of support and understanding of the history of the school system that impacts many First Nations, Metis and Inuit people today.

The phrase “Every Child Matters” reminds everyone that children are such an important and integral part of our communities and that they are our future generations of changemakers. By wearing an orange shirt, we have an opportunity to bring awareness to the history of residential schools and to stand up against other injustices that may impact our children/students.

St. Bernadette Newswire: Important Message Regarding Ongoing Labour Negotiations – CUPE

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As you may be aware from media reports, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), representing education workers across the province, has announced plans to begin a province-wide “Work-to-Rule’ campaign beginning on Monday, September 30, 2019.

We are aware that bargaining between the union and government is planned to continue throughout the weekend. We respect collective bargaining and are hopeful that a freely negotiated agreement will be reached soon.

Regardless of the outcome of this weekend’s bargaining, all of our schools will remain open, and CUPE staff will report to work as usual. Student instruction will continue in our classrooms and, as always, the safety and well-being of students will continue to be our top priority.

As a Catholic school board, we value all of our staff as dedicated, caring professionals, and we respect labour laws that affirm the legal rights of our unionized employee groups to engage in job actions. We know that all sides are working hard to reach agreements, and we are hopeful that a new central agreement will soon be reached with our CUPE education workers.

Where to Find Information Updates

As new information becomes available it will be posted to the WCDSB website at: https://www.wcdsb.ca/about-us/labour-updates/

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this period of uncertainty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Which WCDSB employees are represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees?

A: The following WCDSB positions are represented by CUPE:

  • Education Assistants
  • Personal Support Workers
  • Child and Youth Care Workers
  • Early Childhood Educators
  • Lunch Hour Supervisors
  • Administrative Assistants
  • Payroll and Accounting Associates
  • Computer Technicians
  • Library Technicians
  • Communicative Disorders Assistants

Q: What does “work to rule” mean?

A:  CUPE has indicated that they are planning to withdraw specific services that they would normally perform.  Employees represented by CUPE provide many important services within our schools and board, and despite our best efforts the withdrawal of these services will cause some disruption. We will not be able to completely eliminate all impacts. Despite the impact of the withdrawal of services, we know that our schools will remain welcoming Christ centred environments.

St. Bernadette Emergency Drills

Good Morning,

Yesterday we had a lockdown drill at St. Bernadette Catholic School.  It was very successful and all students and staff followed procedures.
We will be competing our 3 fire evacuations, lockdown and tornado drills for the fall term by the end of today.
Our students and staff are prepared for an emergency!

Nutrition For Learning Begins Tomorrow Morning

Good Evening,

Our Nutrition For Learning All School Morning Meal will begin tomorrow.  Every classroom will receive a food bin prior to morning announcements containing 3 of 4 food groups (always including vegetables/fruit and dairy).   Your child(ren) will have the opportunity to attend school well nourished.  This can only happen due to our volunteers, Christine Rito, Joanne Quirion, student helpers and staff members who work very hard every day to get the program running.  Thank you!

Nutrition for Learning is an organization that provides healthy breakfasts to children in our school. For more information about what they do and how you could get involved visit their website at nutritionforlearning.ca

St. Bernadette Newswire: Pizza Days and Agendas

Good Morning

A quick follow-up regarding student agendas.  Unfortunately, Premier Agenda has not provided any information regarding a timeline on delivery.  This is a school board wide issue and not only happening at St. Bernadette.  I understand parents and staff are frustrated but please know we are doing everything we can to resolve the issue.  When they do arrive, we will distribute them accordingly and ask if you could please donate $2.00 for the cost of one.  Our Primary Agenda arrived last night and I believe we are waiting for our Intermediates.  Junior Agendas were distributed two weeks ago.

Tomorrow will be our first Pizza Day Lunch.  Students will have the opportunity to purchase a slice of cheese only or cheese/pepperoni at a cost of $1.50.  We will keep the same prices as last year.  With our pizza day lunches, our school community will still have the opportunity to pay cash on the day.  We will accept cash on the pizza days throughout the school year.  School Cash OnLine  will remain as another an option for our school community to purchase pizza when it is up and running.

Thank you for your cooperation and if you have any questions or concerns, please contact the office.

Have a great day!
